The girls have always been fans of the Barbie movies. They watch them over and over again until they can say every word and sing every song. It was no surprise that Elise used some of her birthday money to buy Barbie and the Three Musketeers when it came out last month. I watched it with her and thought it would be cute if the girls were musketeers for Halloween. I figured Wal-Mart would have the dresses and it would be a cute and easy costume. The girls loved the idea. It seemed like a great plan until I went shopping. The only dress I could find in stores was the pink one. Bummer. Not wanting to disappoint the girls, I decided to just make some dresses. Big mistake. My sewing skills are sufficient for making pajama pants. Altering patterns, putting in zippers, and making petticoats are way beyond my skill set. But, I did it anyway. The process took MUCH longer than I anticipated and each dress has its own special flaw that makes me twitch. But, the girls are happy. I guess that counts for something. :) Next year I am going to take them to the store and let them pick any costume they want off the shelves. I am officially out of the costume making business.
As much as the sewing part was a pain, it was actually pretty fun to make the masks and add the embellishments to the front of the dresses. Nate helped out by making foam boot tops for each of the girls. He did a great job. My favorite part was making a costume for Miette (Abby’s cat).

Can't wait to see them today! I'm sure the costumes turned out great and you'll forget all about the self inflicted pain by next September ;)
What? Where is the picture?? I'm guessing you'll post it later, right?
uh, what about pictures? not really fair to write about the things you have been working on and not show them to us. i can completely relate with this post. but i know you and you are very creative and next year you will not be able to spend a lot of money on a silly costume you know you can make yourself and do a much cuter job. wow, i think i just had a breakthrough. call me next year and we will go halloween costume shopping together.
so sorry about the ramblings and run-on sentences.
Absolutely darling, as I can now attest, and you'd never know you weren't a master seamstress.
And you totally now have a remembrance: "Remember when we all dressed up as The Three Musketeers?"
"Oh yeah, that was one of my favorite costumes!"
"Mine too!"
Looking forward to seeing some photos! Hope you don't twitch too much every time you look at them!
You always make me think I should stop whining. I can't wait to see the dresses and knowing you they are darling!
waiting, waiting to see those pics! i'm sure the dresses are incredible!
Everyone should go ahead and lower their expectations. They really aren't fabulous; they just took a long time. It makes me nervous to post pictures if you're expecting greatness. :)
