We gave each of the kids their own camera as their end of school gift. We got them on a great deal in November. We were going to give them to the kids for Christmas, but we ended up buying too much other stuff. We decided it would be a good idea to wait until the end of school so they could take pictures on our vacation. I have to say that we hit the jackpot with this gift. The kids are thrilled about having their own cameras.
Ben immediately jumped into reporter mode and did little video interviews with each of his sisters. They were fairly reluctant interviewees, but he kept trying. His specialty seems to be taking pictures (and videos) of people when they are not expecting it.
Emily and Elise are both pretty selective about what pictures they keep. They deleted so many off of their cameras that when we copied them to the computer they each only had about a dozen photos. Their coolest trick so far was to make a slideshow of their pictures. Elise took a video of Emily’s LCD screen as she scrolled through her photos and then Emily took a video of Elise’s LCD screen playing the video back (so she could have the slideshow on her camera). They are funny girls. Elise is the queen of self-portraits and Emily has been practicing using macro mode to get some close-ups.

Abby has been snapping away non-stop. She has already taken over 600 pictures. We set her camera to 3 megapixels so she wouldn’t fill up her card too fast. Judging from her pictures, she appears to have a little foot fetish. Every 5th or 6th picture is a shot of someone’s feet. When we first bought the cameras, we were going to just get three and then give her one of our old cameras. I’m so glad that we got her one just like the others. Of all of the kids, she is the most excited about this fancy new toy.
So far the kids have done a really good job of taking care of their cameras. Hopefully we can make it all the way through our summer vacation without any casualties. They have started exploring the menus and trying out different settings. I’m looking forward to lots more pictures from the kids’ perspective. It is fun to see the world through their eyes/lenses. I just wish they would learn the rules about taking things from a different angle so you can’t see when the house is messy. :)

what a great idea!! you always find really great deals on things like this. jared and i will have to think about this for our kids this christmas.
Love it! I just saw a great deal on a camera and wondered if I should just pick one up for Sophie. I love how Cecily and now Marri have used there cameras, it just tickles and fascinates me to see what these kids think are picture worthy.
What a great idea! I love hearing how different they all are with their cameras.
