We had a quick breakfast at the hotel. Abby spilled her cup of hot chocolate all
over the table and floor, prompting Ben to say that “maybe we shouldn't give
her brown liquids anymore.” We spent a
few minutes watching the cool prairie dogs by the hotel before heading out of
town. We stopped by the Monticello Temple
for a photo and then drove to Cortez, Colorado.
We picked up tickets for our tour at the Colorado Welcome Center and
then headed up to the park. There was
some major road construction going on and it was a long drive. The kids were all sick of being in the car
and kind of cranky by the time we got there.
We stopped for a picnic lunch once we got in the park. Everyone was in much better spirits after
getting food in our bellies and some fresh air.
We did the Cliff Palace tour first.
Our tour guide was great. She
knew a lot and made it really interesting despite two or three know-it-all people
on the tour who kept interrupting and asking her questions/telling her
stuff.
We did the self-guided tour at Spruce House and got to go
down into one of the kivas. On the hike
back up we saw a lizard that was missing his tail and another tiny lizard that
was doing pushups. We checked out the
museum and drove around to some of the other dwellings. It was amazing to see how the people
lived. They were really skilled at
living off the land. We are sure blessed
to have so many modern conveniences.
When we got back to the hotel, Nate ran and picked up some
food from Arby's for dinner. Then he
took the kids out to play miniature golf on the dinky little course at our
hotel while I finished working on the ward newsletter. They looked like orphans, but they had lots
of fun. We like staying at quirky, old
school motels with cool things like actual metal keys and run-down miniature
golf courses.

Those little cities are amazing looking! I love Elise and Emily's poses in the last picture.
